Waste Management in Smart Cities

Waste Management in Smart Cities

The planning and implementing waste management programme is one of the major concern of any of the Smart city project.

The consultants of a smart city are required to evaluate and formulate the strategy that is adapted for the waste management for the development of the smart city.

One of the project management consultants of Agra Smart city named as Gaia Smart Cities Solution Private Limited has suggested a systematic end to end plan for waste management.

The responsibility of the Municipal Corporation is to collect, segregate, transport and dump the waste of the city.

Transferring the waste is done with the help of primary collection vehicles from which the waste has to be transferred to the secondary collection vehicles that are responsible to transfer that waste to the waste processing plant for dumping.

All these waste is collected from door to door via waste bins of the home or through the bins settled at the streets. All these bins are labeled properly that is helpful to segregate the waste.

Municipal Corporation gives the in charge of this whole process to the people those who can manage the proper utilization of available resources. The services delivered by this staff directly impacts the cleanliness and hygiene of the city.

But there are some problems which is faced by the concerned authorities while processing the solid waste:

  1. Mismanagement in the process of collecting waste in less time.
  2. Poor arrangement for monitoring for the collection and tracking of transportation vehicles.
  3. Managing employee’s attendance and their performance.
  4. Lack of proper coordination between primary and secondary transfer vehicles while transferring the waste.
  5. The response time of action.

Proposed Plan:

In today’s world, the technology partners and system Integrators engaged with the department of solid waste of the Municipal corporation for establishing the right system for solid waste management. This system will be able to do planning, monitoring and controlling properly.

The Agra smart city has the vision to spread awareness among the people of Agra about cleanliness and hygiene.

They are using monitoring system, Special purpose vehicles to encourage flexible mechanism of waste management with the help of advanced technology.

The solution which is proposed uses the RFID and GPS enables the plan to manage the solid waste. The GPS tracker is fixed with the waste collection vehicle and RFID tags are attached to the community bins.

The Android phone can easily get in connect with these technologies. They can generate a request to call the staff for collecting the waste and once the task is completed staff notifies the citizen. They can generate this request via phone call or SMS. The track of all the requests has been maintained by the concerned staff.

Waste should be managed properly because it has a serious impact on the health of citizens and on the environment. It is just about collecting the household and commercial waste, that is the initial stage of waste management. It is more about processing that waste and recycling non-biodegradable waste to use it again.

To achieve the uppermost level of cleanliness and health safety majors of the citizen, various schemes have been introduced by the government like Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan to make the people aware about the importance of managing the waste.

Public toilets are made by the government to reduce the infection spread because of the poor arrangement for sanitation. After launching of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan the government has taken the feedback from the public also to identify the gaps in the services and fill them.

The public can use their mobile phones to give their valuable opinion via the app.

The main motive is to build a sustainable policy in the cities to attract more and more tourists from all over the world. Municipal corporation tries to recycle non-biodegradable waste such as plastic and polythene. The business model is used for the regeneration of the plastic and Public-Private-Partnership Model and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSF) funding schemes are used to spread the awareness to save the environment.

Why Smart cities are using Smart bins?

Smart Bins are enabled with technology that helps them to communicate the information regarding underflow and overflow condition of the bin.

Smart way of communication leads to fewer visits that also limits the congestion and results in clean streets.

A reduced traffic jam can help to control Carbon emission from the vehicles.

Smart bins are not only useful for proper management of the waste but also attract the citizens because of the following reasons:

Encourage people to optimally utilize renewable energy resources.

Awareness of meeting health standards with proper waste and sanitation management.

Help to gather and analyze the data about the waste with respect to its volume and area.

Role of  IoT:

IoT can also be used for an effective plan of solid waste management. It can merge the waste processing with the technology that will automatically reduce them, manual work and work on the basis of real-time data.

IoT uses the sensors that have the long battery life to capture that real-time data. These sensors are deployed with the bin to make them smart.

Sensors can be used to track the vehicles and for proper communication between working staff, Municipal Corporation, and the public.

The smart solar-powered bins can also be used to utilize the solar energy and charge the sensors with it.
