Restroom sanitization during the times of the Coronavirus pandemic?

The unprecedented nature of the pandemic and its overwhelming magnitude has left each one of us shell-shocked. The economies are tumbling and people are becoming jobless with the massive damage that the COVID-19 viral strain is causing globally. Hence the governments around the world have decided to ease the lockdown restrictions and allow the people to have a breather.

But with the ease of the lockdown restrictions, the health and safety guidelines are gaining more importance than before. The WHO had clearly stated that social distancing and practicing cleaning and thorough sanitation measures are imperative to regain control of your health. But with the ease of lockdown, social distancing is slowly becoming impossible to practice. In such a scenario, cleaning, sanitization, and disinfection measures are going to attain maximum importance, more so in public places.

Why is restroom sanitation important?

Adequate restroom sanitation is important to boost the health of people and ensure a reduction in the spread of diseases. Sanitation and disinfection services within public restrooms are aimed at protecting the health and promoting good practices by providing a clean environment.

But in the wake of this colossal Coronavirus pandemic, restroom sanitation has gained importance to a different level. A public restroom could possibly invite people from different parts of the city. With the COVID-19 transmissions on the rise and community transmission on the cards, it is likely that a huge percentage of the population is going to get the virus, even if they are asymptomatic. The problem with the virus is of two kinds.

One, an infected person does not develop potential symptoms until a week or two and therefore can spew respiratory droplets anywhere, including the restroom. Secondly, the viral strain is quite adamant and can sustain itself in adverse conditions for seven to nine days and still retain its infecting capacity. Therefore, implementing regular cleaning, disinfection, and sanitation of public restrooms holds immense significance. It will come in handy to safeguard the health of anyone who uses the restrooms and prevent viral transmission.

Items used for restroom sanitization:

Unlike the usual viruses or bacteria that inhabit restrooms or public toilets, the SARS Cov-2 strain can stay active on various inanimate surfaces even after prolonged exposure. Therefore, every restroom should be cleaned with the best cleaning agents and sanitized properly. Since there is no positive result yet concerning the cure of the virus, therefore the regular cleaning and sanitizing activities are the only hope to neutralize the viral strain. The most commonly used sanitizing agents are:

  • Isopropyl or Rubbing Alcohol of 91% strength
  • Chlorine of 1000ppm concentration
  • Hydrogen peroxide of 0.5% concentration

In the end:

Since a public restroom is a high-risk area where several people visit every day, their cleaning and sanitation are of prime significance. Each item in a restroom generally encounters a considerable amount of human touch, which will make the public susceptible to the dangerous SARS Cov-2 viral strain. Every item within a public restroom should be cleaned, disinfected, and sanitized properly to thwart the risk of viral transmission.
