Green Initiatives In India: The Kempegowda International Airport

Green Initiatives that are  taken by Kempegowda International Airport

The BLR airport of Bangalore is known as the third busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic. Around 22.2 million passengers visited at the airport in 2016.

The Bengaluru International airport has taken various initiatives to encourage green practices. The major objective of those green initiatives is to use all the resources in an efficient way. They have set an example for sustainable cleaning practices in front of the world. Another reason for implementing green initiative is to make sure the optimum utilization of chemical that will not harm the ecosystem.

Few areas of concern are :

  • Façade Cleaning
  • Chemical consumption
  • Waste Bins
  • Washroom hygiene
  1. Chemical Composition
A new strategy has been adopted to use optimizing cleaning agents with the help of super concentrated chemicals. The dilution ratio is also reduced up to 3-6 ml per Litre of water.
The motive of implementing this strategy is to limit the generation of waste at the time of packing materials and reduce the chemical utilization.
  2. Façade Cleaning
The terminal building of BLR airport consists of glass facade. It is cleaned with RO water because no chemicals can be used on it and RO water is free from salt and minerals that make the glass dust resist. To dispense this RO water the Carbon Tech poles are used that are very lightweight and have the capability to reach up to the height of about 18 m.
In traditional method for generating Ro water leads to the wastage of 80% of waster and only 20% RO water was generated.
To overcome this problem a new technology has been adopted that is based on the concept of deionization of resin filter. It can generate 100% of RO water without any wastage of single drop of the water.
  3. Waste Bins
They did an experiment and replaced the plastic liners of office bins with small metal.
It was done because the amount of we waste goes into the bins is very less.
A separate slot of metal is made in the bins for the wet waste.
Another smart decision was to implement the use of fiber-reinforced plastic liners.
  4. Washroom hygiene
In washrooms, the proper management of water supply is ensured but with the condition that it will be shut off when it is not required.
The odor-control is an aspect to ensure proper hygiene.
For the comfort of passengers, the options of water and soap, hand sanitizer, soap and hand dryer are given.
W/C sensors are used for a deep cleaning purpose that reduces the wastage of chemical at the time of auto flushing.

Accolades achieved by this Airport:

The Bengaluru airport is awarded for optimum use of pesticides by GreenCO.The pest control is based on proper monitoring instead of schedule based treatment. It is beneficial because it ensures the required use of pesticides that will not harm the ecosystem.
